Introduction to Golestan University

On October 3, 1957, higher education in Golestan Province was founded by opening of the Junior College of Forestry and Range Management by the Minister of Agriculture in Gorgan. The college was transformed into the school of Natural Resources in 1975.

After Islamic Revolution in 1979, the School of Natural Resources was joined to the Ministry of Science, with the approval of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Science, and became a faculty of natural resources under the cover of Mazandaran University.

After the Cultural Revolution, coincided with the re-opening of higher education universities and institutes in 1982, four departments were formed. These educational departments were engaged in associate and undergraduate program of studies, and postgraduate education courses began in 1981.

The Natural Resources Faculty of Gorgan was upgraded to Gorgan University Complex of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources in 1988 and gained its independence from Mazandaran University. In 1992, the university complex with three faculties of sciences, agricultural sciences, and natural resources was upgraded to Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. In 2008, in order to develop higher education in the country and due to the urgent need of the region and the province in powerful and expert forces in all academic fields, the three faculties of sciences, humanities, and engineering and technology were separated from Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and formed the base of Golestan University, which has gained many honors in the scientific and cultural fields as one of the most prestigious centers of higher education in the north of the country, due to its background and its proper fields.

Currently, Golestan University consists of Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Technology (Gorgan Campus), and Faculty of Engineering and Technology (Ali-Abad Katoul Campus). Among other scientific and cultural departments affiliated with Golestan University, are Golestan Science and Technology Incubator, and Golestan Institute of Islamic Sciences Developmental Center, which have been taken steps to spread the Islamic Sciences among the academicians of the province.

Now, over 4000 students are studying in 5 fields of study in PhD, 39 fields of study in postgraduate, 31 fields of study in undergraduate, and 1 field of study in associate degrees, and there are 152 full-time faculty members.
